All hail the conquering hero. A time for leadership, when the people come thronging together to acknowledge their common lord. Technological advancements and innovations are especially favoured -- the discovery of new tools for creation and invention that promise to improve our lives. As always in times of Wood, we must expect the unexpected: shocks, crises, storms, eruptions and the coming of something new.

The Fulfilment:

Iceland: Loki Volcano in the midst of the Vatnajokull glacier erupts today, showering the area with steam and sodden ash. Great danger of flash floods as the glacier melts. First eruption since 1938. "Eruptions and the coming of something new."

Bosnia: American troops will stay in Bosnia for an additional five months to cover for the retreat of other NATO forces. "A time for leadership".

Canada: International conference opens today with seventy nations in attendance. The goal is to launch work towards a global ban on land mines in war. "A time for leadership, when the people come thronging together".

Poland: First Nobel Prize of the year is awarded and it goes to poet Wislawa Szymborska of Krakow for literature.

South Africa: Wildfires started by lightning scorch one third of Kruger National Park, the most biologically diverse park in the world -- thousands of animals die. "Expect the unexpected: shocks, storms, crises."


Russia: Diehard communists march to mark anniversary of Yeltsin's attack on the Duma -- 140 people died in that struggle.

Brazil: Municipal elections confirm public approval of the current president, Fernando Cardoso. He wants to seek a second term two years from now. "All hail the conquering hero. A time for leadership, when the people come thronging together."

Burma: Govt blocks travel into the country by Americans in response to American ban on Burmese travel to the USA.

Israel: Govt and the PLO work out "Hot Zones" where demonstrators will not be allowed to go by either side.

Antarctica: Ozone hole is early this year and already twice the size of Europe at 7.7 million square miles. That's almost the size of Russia ....


Bosnia: Inauguration of the new collective presidency, but its Serbian member boycotted his own ceremony. "A time for leadership, when the people come thronging together to acknowledge their common lord."

France: Bordeaux: Bomb damages mayoral offices of PM Alain Juppe. No injuries and Juppe himself was not around at that time.

Iceland: Joki volcano getting hotter --- flooding thought to be imminent as the glacier rapidly begins to melt. "Eruptions."


Denmark: Copenhagen: Gang war between rival motorcycle gangs turns ugly as bazooka is fired into a clubhouse. Two are dead and twenty hurt.

NATO: Russia's Alex Lebed visits Brussels for talks with NATO on its expansion plans.

Canada: Maritime premiers and politicians gather to discuss the idea of Maritime political union within Confederation. "A time for leadership, when the people come thronging together."

Israel: Govt and PLO negotiators set up a special committee to deal specifically with the question of Hebron.
